I believe I won't be posting any mp3's for a while (unless I get off my ass and find another place to upload them), but I'm going to keep running this blog and coming up with something every now and then. So, G.A.S.O.L.I.N.E ain't dead, nor in a coma (like certain blogs, *ahem*Somethingilearnedtoday*ahem*), it's just pining for the fjords.

Päät - Jet Set 7" (1979)

Päät ("The Heads") were an early finnish punk band, their most well known song being the feminist anthem "Rotat". Their first, more punk rock line-up was fronted by vocalist Pivo Rosenqvist. She dropped out of the band somewhere in 1979, and the second line-up was more "new wave" than punk. Anyway, they were one of the few finnish punk bands with a female vocalist (Rutto is the only one I can remember, in addition to Päät). This is their first single, released in 1979 on Love records.

R.I.P. Jakke Hallikainen & Pete "Räkä" Malmi

It's been a sad week. The founder and vocalist of Briard (the first punk band in Finland to release a record), Pete "Räkä" Malmi died on Sunday and the founder, guitarist and (post-split w/Cadgers) vocalist of Kaaos, Jakke Hallikainen, died on Wednesday. Two absolute legends of finnish punk and hardcore lost in a couple of days. Sad, but true.

This is Widows' first single, released in 1979. Widows were one of the few finnish old school punk bands who sang in english and they were very significant in creating the punk scene in Helsinki in places like Kill City and Lepakko. They also did two great singles more and one LP before vocalist Jacky Ix's brushes with the law made the band call it quits in 1981. Great band, shame that most of their material is pretty hard to find nowadays. Poko rekords released "Complete Widows" in 1996, but it seems to be out of print again. Well, here's their debut single.

Briard was the very first finnish punk band to release a record (their I Really Hate Ya 7" in 1977) and this one, released in 1978, was their second one. Great old-school punk rock with Pete "Räkä" Malmi's snotty vocals and Antti Hulkko's AKA Andy McCoy's crushing guitar work. Yes, THAT Andy McCoy from Hanoi Rocks. He was about 16 years old at that time.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2007 is held here in Finland and the finals are today. Basically, it means a lot of crappy music. Anyways, to save my day, and yours too, I decided to upload one of my favorite records ever, the Ääretön Joulu EP by the legendary Terveet Kädet. Seriously, this is right up there with the best of 'em.

Here's a video clip from the movie Saimaa- Ilmiö (directed by Aki Kaurismäki). Hassisen Kone was one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) bands here in the early 1980s. They were probably more "new wave" than punk, but great nonetheless. Vocalist Ismo Alanko was later in Sielun Veljet, another legendary, but far more radical band.

Classic drunk punk. You know, the whole sXe straight edge shit never worked here. The whole 80s hc-scene was full of drunks, every fan and every band. Maho Neitsyt is a perfect example, two of these three songs are about alcohol ("Ei Tippa Tapa" is an Irwin Goodman- cover and the best drinking song ever). The second is from the same sessions, released on the Propaganda comp "Russia Bombs Finland" (1982). The two other songs are from the "Järjetön Maailma" LP (1983), but the song "Liian monta turhaa sotaa" was included on the ROIR comp "World Class Punk".

Well, time to live up to the blog`s description once again. This time it`s a classic song by a classic band, Estonias very own JMKE with their breakthrough hit "Tere Perestroika". Until 1991, Estonia was a satellite country for the Soviet Union and punk really couldn`t catch fire under the watching eye of Soviets. Punk was very underground, and in countries like Estonia punk really meant something rebellious. JMKE was probably the biggest and most famous band there, and although the Militsiya and KGB constantly harassed them (and other punks), the band continued on and in 1987, delivered this classic song. I think it`s one of the best punk songs ever, political punk at its finest. It became a hit both in Estonia and here in Finland, much to KGB`s dislike. More information can be found here. BTW, Estonian is, like Finnish, Finno-Ugric language so no worries about understanding anything.

The legendary Poko rekords released a finnish christmas-rock/punk album "Kylmää Joulua" (which means "(Have a)Cold Christmas" in english)in 1978. Most of the bands were rockabilly and more straight-forward rock bands like Popeda and Teddy & The Tigers, but early legends like Kollaa Kestää and Eppu Normaali (check earlier posts) were included. A band from the 1st wave of punk. They were quite amateurish, their musical skills were rudimentary at best, but there`s still something very special in the band that makes them legendary. In my humble opinion, Musti Sotkoira is a perfect punk song. Hell yeah it`s sloppy but man I like it! The lyrics tell a both sad and clever story of a military dog serving in the war. Even the bands name is about the Winter War (the battle of Kollaa, "Kollaa will prevail").

Yeah! For the 89th time we celebrate our freedom, and it`s a holiday so I finally have some spare time to post something here. "Something" meaning a song by Mellakka called "Itsenäisyyspäivä" (which is finnish for independence day). So, pretty unimaginative to choose this song, but it`s a rocking little hc-tune. Like most of the stuff written in the 80`s hc- era, this song isn`t the most patriotic but it`s INDEPENDENCE DAY! Eat it, Russians. All we need now is Karelia back... sorry, goin` off topic. Enjoy the tune while I`ll go and fetch my guns and start my one-man operation. Don`t tell anyone!

So for once I decided to live up to the blogs name, it IS "great alluring sounds of liberty IN NORTHERN EUROPE" after all.
I don`t know much about swedish punk, though. Maybe it`s because I`ve not listened to it or read about it much.
But now, take a listen and a look at this stuff, old-school swedish punk from 1978-79 or so. The movie clips are from a swedish punk documentary from 1978, and basically give a very authentic picture of the old-school punk scene in Sweden. Very fascinating. Big thanks to dexter63.

Virtanen - proto-punk from Finland

Virtanen was a very weird band, and seemed even weirder back in the days when there was no punk. The band existed from 1974 to 1976, and made a lot of noise. Back then, there wasn`t ANYTHING like them in Finland. Their music was at the same time very avant-garde, but still rocked hard and their stage antics were crazy. They were like the finnish Stooges, but more humorous and freaky. Now they are considered proto-punk legends here.
Elektroninen Xtaasi has been covered numerous times by various finnish punk bands, and it`s a classic.

Mellakka was an awesome hardcore band from the mid-/late 80`s, with a very powerful sound and attitude. Easily one of my all-time favorites, so I decided to post (in my opinion) their best track "Kiitollinen Kansalainen", the opening track from their Itsenäisyyspäivä EP (1985). Almost all of their material is top class, so if you`re interested, check out their EP`s from 7inchpunk.

Eppu Normaali was the leading band of the first wave of finnish punk, alongside Pelle Miljoona (w/ N.U.S or 1980) and they started out as a mix of The Ramones/The Sex Pistols, with the sense of humour and speed of The Ramones and the look, attitude and chaos of the `Pistols. Their first album, Aknepop, is a finnish punk classic but soon they changed their style to more basic rock and became one of the biggest acts in the business. Now they are considered legends here and their gigs are very rare and always sold-out.
Poliisi Pamputtaa Taas was their very first single, and it`s a classic. While Aknepop is more `Pistols-sounding, this single is faster and you can hear the influence of Ramones (vocalist Martti Syrjä and bassist Mikko Saarela saw Ramones perform here in 1977 and were blown way). It`s also my favorite song of theirs, and I bet anyone who likes punk will like this one too. The B-side is great too.

Dictionary definition of what is known as the typical finnish hardcore- sound. Really aggressive material. Right up there with Rattus, Terveet Kädet and Riistetyt as one of the most legendary bands from the early 80`s finnish HC- scene. These are the 4 tracks that were included on the "Systeemi Ei Toimi" EP (1982). You should check out the "Totaalinen Kaaos" EP and their debut "Kytät On Natsisikoja" EP (split w/ Cadgers AKA Riistetyt) too from 7inchpunk, because they are some of the best stuff the band ever recorded.

One of my favorites right here, this is their debut single from 1979. Ratsia were an awesome old-school punk band, with catchy and up-beat classics like this gem. Their first album is mind-blowing (it doesn`t include these tracks), and it`s a huge shame that it hasn`t been reissued yet. Well, let`s hope it will be soon. Meanwhile, you can listen to this one. The A-side is one of the most well-known and loved punk classics in Finland and the B-side is just as good (if not better).

I decided to post some new stuff for a change. I have posted stuff only from the late 70`s and early-to-mid 80`s but I thought it would be good to represent some of the current bands too. So, here is one of my favorites today, Kyre & Duunarit. It`s a shame that there hasn`t been much Oi!- punk in Finland. Pretty strange too, considering that there are shitloads of working class people here and we Finns like to drink. A LOT. Maybe it`s the fact that Finland sucks at football. Dunno, but Kyre & Duunarit is fine working class punk. True stories about living on the dole, shitty jobs and urban isolation. And drinking.

Sehr Schnell (yes, a finnish band, nevermind the name) was formed in 1977, and they were included in the first finnish punk- collection "Pohjalla" LP (1978). They weren`t very skilled musicians, and while Ratsia was referred as the Stiff Little Fingers of Finland, Sehr Schnell bore a resemblance to Wire. Their music was slow, simplistic and slightly hypnotic. Not everyones cup of tea, but some of their stuff is really good, like this one. One of the best things about this song is the mood and lyrics, which paint a vivid image of a galley ship slave. Trying to be optimistic ("you get exercise, meet new people, and the music is good") and used to his boring job, but someone`s gotta do it. Like most of their songs, it mocks the normal middle-class life and how people put up with it.

Ever wonder what Sex Pistols or Ramones might sound like in Finnish? Didn`t think so, BUT these two tracks will give you a hint how obscure and hilarious it could be. The lyrics were changed for "Kaljupäinen Gangsteri" (mocking of then-current president Kekkonen), but Ne Luumäet made a very to-the-point translation of Ramones` lyrics, even replacing New York with Helsinki! Now that`s what I call global.

Just when I`m about to declare another band as The Best Finnish Punk Rock Band Ever (c), a new one pops into my mind. Lama, Ratsia... and hell, how can I not mention Terveet Kädet? Seriously, this band is BRUTAL. One of the first hardcore bands in the world, and probably the most well known of all the finnish punk bands. And raw. Just take a listen to this 7", released in 1980. Not the bands finest (that would be Ääretön Joulu, which you can find from various blogs like Strange Reaction), but still kicks serious amounts of ass and shows a load of promise. Psychotic stuff.

Hilarious, reckless, out of control drunk punk from the early 80`s hardcore scene. Musically, it sounds pretty much like Unicef (check the Käkimassaa EP), even the vocalist Pexi sounds equally as harsh with his booze- powered vocal performance. Great shit indeed, this song is from their "Vitustakos Näistä Tietää?" 7", released in 1985.

"Scraping tonsil bites of harsh vocal growlings overpower the raw early punk flavour that this Finnish ensemble grind out. Not the "stereotyped" Finish assault of chaotic thrash, but something more in the line of Personality Crisis or Skrewdriver*, building a vulgar progression of power thrusted into snarling hacks. Unicef contains former members of LAMA, but this band is very different. A gargling release."

*= The song Käkimassaa IS actually a cover of Skrewdriver song "You`re So Dumb" (the pre-Nazi, original Skrewdriver, which had nothing to do with Ian Stuarts later stupidity).

Yup, that pretty much says it all. Unicef was an extreme band, with their furious stage antics ("assistents" with baseball bats, on-stage fights etc.) and they never released anything but this 3-track single. Vocalist Tino died in 1995, if I remember correctly, so chances of seeing this band are nil. There happens to be a short documentary about his life, which won a couple of awards in European film festivals.

Pelle Miljoona & N.U.S

Although Briard was the first finnish punk band to record anything, and it`s pretty impossible to name THE first finnish punk band, Pelle Miljoona & N.U.S were definitely one of the few first bands of the movement. Pelle himself has had a very lenghty career, although his bandmates have changed. N.U.S was his first band and they were around only for a couple of years (1977-78), before Pelle formed Pelle Miljoona & 1980, Pelle Miljoona Oy. etc.

Of all the early finnish punk bands, Pelle Miljoona & N.U.S were the most political. Unlike bands like Eppu Normaali and Briard who were more anarchistic and wild, Pelle Miljoona has always used music as a way to express his views about things he saw around him. This first single, Olen Työtön b/w Mä Vain Pogoon was released during a time when several ten thousand people were without a job, and the A-side is an angry rant about being unemployed. But "Mä Vain Pogoon" isn`t political, it`s an ode to everyone`s favorite dance, pogoing. Fine vintage punk rock.

Honestly, I don`t know much about this band, just that they were part of the Finnish hardcore-scene and their career has had a lot of up-and-downs (including murder and alcohol problems). Kill From The Heart has a lot of info there about Kohu-63, so if you want to know more about their history check out the link.

"Paavola" is one of their earliest tracks and it`s from their Pelimannimusaa 7" (1981). A fast, aggressive song for slamdancing.

LAMA

Lama. A great way to get started. Lama was probably the best finnish punk band (and one of the best punk bands ever in my humble opinion), and it is considered a link between the original finnish punk scene and the 80`s hardcore explosion. Lama got started in 1978 and played until 1983, by then they had issued two albums (Lama LP 1982, Ja Mikään Ei Muuttunut (singles) 1983), one EP (Väliaikainen 7" 1981) and three singles (Totuus Löytyy Kaurapuurosta 1980, Nimetön 1981, Ajatuksen Loppu 1982).

I picked the song "Koputus" from their s/t LP, since it`s one of their most powerful and serious songs. It has a sort of menacing vibe to it. Take a listen:

Just started with this, so nothing special yet. My main idea is to post some punk music from my home country, Finland, for people who are interested in this kind of music. I know it`s difficult as hell to find some of this stuff even here, so I thought I might help with posting some selected tracks. I do not encourage piracy nor do I support it, but sometimes internet can really help you, especially if you`re a music fanatic like me. But if you`re from the band or you have something to do with the band/song and you feel the rights have been violated and want me to remove the song, then no problem. Just contact me via e-mail.
